Oil and Gas Businesses in Ontario

The oil and gas industry in Ontario is not so big as its counterpart in western Canada. However, it is an active and significant industry in this province. In 1858 North America's first commercial oil at Oil Springs in southwestern Ontario was produced.

The first integrated oil company was built in 1857 and it was processing oil through Williams' refinery. The first offshore well was drilled in Lake Erie in 1913 to explore marine oil reserves.
