It was 2006 and oil crashed.
We were four friends: each unemployed with a knack for engineering.
So we started using James’ basement to design and create downhole tools. Although the basement wasn’t our ideal office, we made it work and used an old ping pong table as a surface to stage our shipments.
At that time, the industry suffered from one primary issue: downhole electronic products had high failure rates. We wanted to make downhole pressure gauges that were both easy to use and actually worked. Starting from day one with a full ERP system, our mission was to combine the best of everything we each knew independently and make the world's best product.
When we eventually moved the ping pong table and our noisy calibration system into a 1,500 square foot commercial space, it seemed like a huge risk. But we began to develop new designs and the foundation for a healthy small business. A daring few joined us on our initial journey, and the DataCan team was born.
Today, our family has grown into a team of about 50 people. We occupy two offices in two countries with about 20,000 square feet of space (slightly bigger than a basement). We opened a branch in Houston, TX, and were awarded Red Deer Canada’s “2019 Business of the Year”. Although we’ve changed a lot over the last 14 years, one thing remains the same…
That ping pong table still looks great in our offices.
In 2014, DataCan purchased the electronics divisions of Quinn’s Energy Services, formerly known as Lee Specialties, and in 2019 also acquired the Measuring Head product line. We now manufacture and support the Lee Specialties line of Production Logging Tools, Data Acquisition Systems, and Software.
In 2017, DataCan Canada received its ISO 9001:2015 certification.
