COSSD.com Search Tips

Users can search for a business by entering a keyword or business name, but not both. Entering a keyword will search for both business names and business categories containing that word, searching for a business name will only bring up businesses beginning with that term.

Keywords: Start with simple, general terms and then narrow your search to be more specific. For example, if you search for "truck," you will be given the option to select a matching category. In this list, you will find every category in the directory containing the word "truck."

Locations: If you’re in Brooks and need to know all the available businesses in that town, simply enter "Brooks" into the location field. You can then use the map to find the nearest business to suits your needs.

Combination search: Combine a keyword and location search to quickly narrow down results. For instance, if you enter "hotel" into the keyword field and "Edmonton" into the location field, your results will be limited to hotels found only in Edmonton.

All businesses brought up by a search will also appear on our online map as long as they have a valid address.

This is a sample search result. The company’s primary location is indicated by the large circle next to it; a smaller circle indicates a branch location.

Zoom in/out: The plus and minus signs on the left side of the map allow users to zoom in and out. However, you can also zoom in by double-clicking anywhere on the map. Holding the control key and double-clicking will zoom out.

Quick zoom: Clicking on the circle next to a primary or branch location will automatically zoom in to that specific town.

Contents of the DVD

The DVD contains all of the comprehensive listings that the print version of COSSD is renowned for. However, the DVD format also offers its own unique advantages, including easy-to-use search capabilities, hyperlinks and the ability to download the entire directory right to your desktop. All you need is 500 MB of hard drive space and a standard Internet browser.

Plug-ins

Most users should not require any plug-in downloads to access the COSSD on DVD. If you have difficulty operating the digital edition, check that you have Flash and Java plug-ins on your computer. In general, no special administrative privileges should be required to run the COSSD on DVD, but you may need to contact your system administrator if the digital edition cannot run on your computer.

Problems loading the DVD

Some users may find that the autoplay feature does not work or runs too slowly. If this is the case, you can simply copy the COSSD30.exe file to your desktop. This will let you access the entire directory from your computer without using the DVD. Just double-click the icon to launch COSSD whenever you need it.

Other problems

Always ensure that your operating system has all the latest updates, as this may correct some problems.
